Tactical Troop (Synopsis)

Charlottetown Police Services

Description: For over 10 years, Charlottetown Police Services has had a partnership agreement with Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) ‘L’ Division, through a memorandum of understanding, to share four to five Charlottetown Police Services members with the provincial ‘L’ Division Tactical Troop. Through this arrangement, Charlottetown Police Services contributes officers who can be deployed throughout the province. In return, Charlottetown Police Services can draw upon the Tactical Troop to respond to incidents requiring specialized tactical capabilities—incidents that Charlottetown Police Services would not otherwise have been able to handle. The RCMP provides specialized training to the Charlottetown Police Services officers as part of the training for the larger Tactical Troop.
Objective: This initiative is a cost-effective way of enhancing the capacity of Charlottetown Police Services to respond to incidents requiring tactical troops.
Outcomes: Through this partnership, Charlottetown Police Services can call upon the Tactical Troop to respond to incidents requiring Tactical Troop capabilities. Charlottetown Police Services officers assigned to the Tactical Troop receive specialized training that the Charlottetown Police Services would not otherwise have been able to afford. These trained resources have been made available to assist with national priorities including the 2010 Olympic Games and the G8 and G20 summits. A formal evaluation of this initiative has not been conducted.
Resources: This initiative does not require significant resources. For Charlottetown Police Services officers assigned to the Tactical Troop, Charlottetown Police Services pays for uniforms and travel costs to the training facility. The RCMP pays to train and equip the officers as part of the larger Tactical Troop team.
