Patrols in Parks and on Cycling Trails (Synopsis)

Blainville Police Service

Description: Since 2006, the Blainville Police Service has used police cadets to patrol the Blainville municipality’s green spaces and its network of cycling trails.
Objective: This initiative has several objectives:
  • maintain a sense of security for users of the parks and the cycling network by increasing police visibility through more frequent cadet patrols;
  • promote awareness and crime prevention among users of parks and trails; and
  • identify problems and facilitate interventions by police officers.
Outcomes: A preliminary evaluation found that this initiative had increased the number of arrests and interventions for municipal and criminal offences. More territory is covered by police patrols, resulting in improved security, increased enforcement of municipal bylaws and better relations with community organizations.
Resources: Implementation of this initiative required one coordinator, 10 police cadets and the necessary equipment, for a total budget of about $90,000 from mid-May to mid-September on a yearly basis.
