Replacement of Police Cars with More Ecologically Friendly Vehicles (Synopsis)

Sûreté du Québec

Description: In an effort to reduce fuel and purchase costs for vehicles, in 2011, the Sûreté du Québec began to replace its unmarked police cars with more ecologically friendly vehicles. Six-cylinder vehicles are being replaced with four-cylinder models. Seventy-five vehicles will be replaced each year until 2020.
Objective: This initiative seeks to reduce vehicle fleet replacement costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Outcomes: To date, 99 vehicles have been replaced. The Sûreté du Québec estimates a savings of $2,172 on the purchase price of each new vehicle and a fuel-efficiency savings of approximately $4,160 over the vehicle’s life (200,000 km). More results and data will be available in the second year of the initiative (2013).
Resources: No additional costs were incurred other than the replacement cost of vehicles that would otherwise have been replaced after seven years or 200,000 km. The new vehicles are expected to last just as long.
