Since 2002.

Reason for Undertaking the Initiative:

Economic/fiscal, plus the initiative has a definite operational benefit as well. It would have been much more expensive to establish a separate ERT unit. Combining this resource with the RCMP makes it much more affordable. Savings are found in relation to ongoing training and overtime for both agencies.

Resources Required to Implement this Initiative:

Costs are associated with training and equipment (however this would be an associated cost in any event). Having a shared resource also helps in terms of shared costs. CPS pays for kit issue requirements to ERT members, plus initial training costs. The division covers training costs for monthly training and annual re-certification (with the exception of salary costs).
