Canada's Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

The Government of Canada remains committed to advancing disaster risk reduction (DRR) in Canada and internationally, in close collaboration with a diverse range of DRR stakeholders. This year, Public Safety Canada has partnered with the Canadian Risks and Hazards Network (CRHNet) to combine the Annual National Roundtable on DRR with CRHNet’s Annual Symposium.

In light of COVID-19, CRHNet has adapted its Annual Symposium to be an online-only event. CRHNet will virtually host the 2020 National Roundtable on DRR during the Annual Symposium in the fall. Planning is underway to ensure a successful event.

Combining the Annual National Roundtable on DRR with CRHNet’s Annual Symposium is an opportunity to align common DRR objectives through an integrated and efficient platform to build on Canada’s commitment to increasing resilience to disaster risk.

Visit CRHNet’s website for more details on this year’s virtual event.

National Roundtable for Disaster Risk Reduction

Canada's Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) was established in 2009 as a multi-stakeholder national mechanism that coordinates and advises on areas of priority requiring concerted action.  It has national oversight and leadership and is comprised of more than 700 members representing local to national levels of governance, multiple sectors and organizations to provide a whole-of-society perspective to reducing risk.

In 2015, along with 186 other countries from all over the world, Canada endorsed a post-2015 Hyogo Framework, known as the United Nations Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030).  DRR is defined as a systematic, whole-of-society approach to identifying, assessing and analyzing the causal effects of disasters and reducing the risks and impacts of disaster based on risk assessments.

Canada’s Platform on DRR hosts an Annual National Roundtable for DRR, which provides a valuable opportunity for discussion on domestic implementation of the Sendai Framework. For 2020, Public Safety has partnered with CRHNet, who will be virtually hosting the Roundtable in conjunction with their Annual Symposium.
