Answers to top questions

My organization has never been a direct victim of a hate-motivated crime and/or incident, but we feel vulnerable. Can we still apply?

Yes. Private, non-profit organizations linked to a community at risk of hate-motivated crime and who fit one of the eligible recipient classes may apply. You will need to sufficiently explain your organization and project site's risk to a hate-motivated event in your application to be considered. Please review the program eligibility requirements for more information.

What are some common mistakes I should watch out for to avoid delays with my project?

  • Inconsistencies in terms of type, cost and quantity of equipment and services across the provided documentation.
  • Inadequately detailed breakdown of expenses in their quotes or budget, particularly for labour expenses.
  • Ineligible expenses and insufficient detail related to the expense which would require further explanation from the applicant.
  • Inappropriate placement of equipment which raises privacy concerns (e.g. audio-visual equipment in bathrooms and classrooms etc.).
  • Inadequate planning and coordination with vendors and consultations with relevant authorities (e.g. local fire services for vehicle gates) prior to signing an agreement.

Our security upgrades were done prior to hearing about the SIP. Do we qualify for reimbursement?

No. Funding or reimbursements cannot be provided for any activities that have been started or completed prior to signing a funding agreement with Public Safety Canada.

We applied in the past but were rejected. Can we reapply?

Yes. Organizations can reapply regardless of whether they did or did not receive funding.

We received SIP funding in the past. Can we reapply?

Yes. You can reapply under the SIP either to purchase new security equipment, or to upgrade older security equipment. However, you may replace or upgrade operable security equipment previously funded with the SIP only after a period of five (5) years has elapsed.

Can I submit a quote from a business which was unable to provide a GST/HST number?

No. All vendors which are used by the applicant to realize their project must have a registered GST/HST number. Vendors who are not currently registered and in compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) are not supported.

How can I ensure that my application was received?

After submitting your completed application, you will receive an email from "ps.donotreply-external-snap-externe-nepasrepondre.sp@ps-sp.gc.ca" confirming it was received. Please ensure to check your junk/spam folder. If you still have not received a confirmation email after twenty-four (24) hours, please contact sip-pfpis@ps-sp.gc.ca for assistance.

The program offers online information sessions for interested applicants in both official languages. The information sessions present a unique opportunity to learn more about the program, the application process and to ask questions to program officials directly.

Information sessions are offered during or around a Call for Applications period.

To be notified when information sessions are held, subscribe to our mailing list. You may also check this page during an application period regularly. If sessions are offered, a registration link will be made available to you.
