Purpose : The purpose of this project is to develop a crime prevention network and information exchange that meets the needs of crime prevention practitioners and the general public within British Columbia. To do so, the activities proposed will build on the already strong foundation developed through the BC Crime Prevention Association's Crime Prevention and Community Safety Library. Information housed in the library will be used to develop linkages among those working in crime prevention and between projects working in the same areas of crime prevention. The Crime Prevention Network will begin with the implementation of an environmental scan, which will assess the climate of crime prevention in the province. Through this scan, work being done in all areas of crime prevention will be identified. In addition, the needs of crime prevention practitioners and the general public in terms of access to information and resources on crime prevention will be analyzed. Based on the results of this assessment, the Crime Prevention Network will set out to fill these gaps by promoting the Network and the resources available, as well as through the development of additional resources. These resources may be based on the synthesis of available information and resources into easily accessible, user-friendly formats. One of the key components of this project will be an advertising and marketing campaign designed to raise awareness about the presence and availability of the Crime Prevention Network. The success of the Network will be based on its use by crime prevention practitioners and the general public, making the advertising campaign an especially important part of the project. To assist with the development of the project overall and particularly with generating interest in the Network, an advisory committee will be established. Membership will include key stakeholders, as well as non-traditional. Diverse representation among the advisory committee will help to disseminate information about the Network to as many areas of the general public as possible.
