Purpose : The Support, Advocacy and Community Awareness Project for Persons with a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) will serve to profile disabilities as they relate to crime and victimization in Saskatoon, with emphasis on FASD and secondary disabilities, working collaboratively with community and departmental stakeholders, persons with an FASD, families, caregivers and support workers and the Saskatchewan Cognitive Disability Strategy. The project will facilitate stronger linkages between individuals and services that exist, or need to be developed in both the short and long term, leading to improved engagement and practice. This project fosters the development of a support and outreach network for youth, young adults and families to increase the use of resources and increase working relationships between families, youth and young adults, sustaining effective access to support services. It will also provide support to those who are mistrustful and unwilling to engage in formal ongoing programs such as the Cognitive Disability Fund. The project will expand knowledge on gaps in service and policy development and will contribute to a growing need in the criminal justice system to more effectively respond to increased cognitive disabilities as a factor in crime and victimization.
