Purpose : The purpose of this project is to increase the capacity of the community to address the root causes of crime, which will help prevent crime and victimization within the Alberni Valley. Currently, the community suffers the effects of a host of risk factors, including high levels of family stress, negative attitudes, and poverty. To address these, Port Alberni Women's Resources Society will implement a Comprehensive Community Safety Initiative (CCSI). This CCSI will ensure residents and community stakeholders come together to share their efforts in promoting well-being for the area. The project will begin by evaluating the quality of life of the community and mapping its assets. Once this has been conducted and a clearer picture of the community is formed, specific projects designed to address the issues identified will be implemented. To ensure the action plan and resulting strategies continue to address the needs of the community, consultation will be an ongoing part of this three-year initiative. The work conducted will increase the community's knowledge and awareness of the impacts of risk factors and the root causes of crime, build capacity and enhance resiliency. Once completed, this project will result in strong social supports, positive attitudes and beliefs and a high level of community engagement.
