Summary
Talking with Dave Yellow Quill, her counsellor, about how upset she is about the death of her childhood friend Johnny, Gloria starts to think back on his life. As she does, she realizes that Johnny was an abuser, as had been his father before him. The warning signs of domestic violence were everywhere, from childhood until Johnny's tragic demise. Johnny had loved and married Gloria’s friend Carolyn, but Gloria now sees that Carolyn, like Johnny's mother before her, had lived in constant fear for her life. Dave is able to help Gloria come to terms with this tragedy, and realize that she can help to build a support structure for herself, Carolyn, and Carolyn's unborn child.
