OTTAWA, July 23, 2013 — Yesterday, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, attended the Five Country Ministerial Meeting at the Naval Postgraduate College in Monterey, California. The meeting brought together ministers responsible for public safety issues from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
Participating in discussions at the Five Country Ministerial Meeting were U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Australia's Minister for Home Affairs and Justice Jason Clare, New Zealand's Minister of Justice Judith Collins, and U.K.'s Home Secretary Theresa May.
"As the new Minister of Public Safety, I was pleased to meet with my international counterparts. Our Government will always protect the safety and the security of Canadians and that's why these discussions with our key allies are important," said Minister Blaney. "Our Government is working closely with them to address serious and complex security threats we face as individual countries and collectively. Canada has a close and trusted relationship with all these countries and a long history of multilateral and bilateral cooperation on security, intelligence and law enforcement."
The Ministerial Meeting provided an important opportunity for the five countries to discuss common areas of interest, including cyber security and violent extremism, as well as considering ways in which the five countries can further collaborate on issues of public safety.
