HAPPY VALLEY–GOOSE BAY –– August 23, 2012 – The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, was in Happy Valley–Goose Bay today to visit the local RCMP detachment and meet with members and employees. He also met separately with stakeholders to discuss the Harper government's ongoing commitment to treat law-abiding hunters, farmers and sport shooters fairly. The Minister was accompanied by the Honourable Peter Penashue, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada.
“I was pleased to observe firsthand the dedication and professionalism of the RCMP members who serve the citizens of Happy Valley–Goose Bay,” said Minister Toews. “These officers are committed to the safety and security of the people of this region and work tirelessly towards making Canada's streets and communities safe places to live.”
While in Happy Valley–Goose Bay, Minister Toews also met with key stakeholders to discuss issues surrounding firearms including the Harper government's initiative to end the Long Gun Registry. The Minister also highlighted the regulations which came into force this past spring which will help ensure that the will of Parliament is respected in terms of the use of data collected through the Long Gun Registry.
“Our Government is focusing its efforts on combating the criminal use of firearms and supporting measures that work – not those which create unnecessary burdens on Canadians.
