OTTAWA, July 13, 2011 - On behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, today announced a payment of $647,617 to the Government of the Northwest Territories. The payment was made under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) program for eligible costs incurred by the Northwest Territories following severe spring flooding along the Mackenzie River in 2005.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to announce this payment of over $647,000 for the Northwest Territories' response and recovery costs related to the spring flooding in 2005," said Minister Van Loan. "By supporting our provinces and territories when large natural disasters strike, we can help rebuild infrastructure that is key to Canadian communities."

"In several communities across the Northwest Territories flooding is a real threat. Canada is an important partner in assisting community governments to recovery in those instances when flooding causes widespread damage to communities," said Northwest Territories Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Robert C. McLeod. "We are appreciative of the support provided by the Government of Canada."

The spring breakup of the Mackenzie River from May 11-14, 2005, caused flooding in the community of Fort Good Hope in the Northwest Territories. The water damaged public and private property, including the gravel approaches to the bridge on the airport road.

Since its inception in 1970, the DFAA program has provided more than $2 billion in disaster financial assistance to the provinces and territories. For more information on the federal DFAA program and its guidelines, please visit Public Safety Canada's website www.publicsafety.gc.ca.
