I very pleased to take on the role of Secretary of State for Combating Crime and thank the Prime Minister for this opportunity.
In my home community of Brampton, I heard it over and over again when I knocked on doors – crime rates are rising, people are worried about home invasions and their cars being stolen. They are worried about the safety of their kids and their elderly parents.
This government will take strong action to fight crime, protect Canadians and keep our communities safe.
As the Prime Minister said, we can't be tough on crime without being tough on guns. We will continue to protect our communities from the dangers of assault-style firearms and illegal guns crossing our borders.
I'm going to work with my partners in provincial and territorial governments, and law enforcement, to advance strong measures that crack down on gangs, gun violence, repeat offenders, illegal drug trafficking, hate-motivated crime, and auto-theft.
We will continue to invest in concrete measures that will stop our youth from turning to crime in the first place and that will help make Canadians feel safe regardless of where they live across the country.
