Summary
This report presents the insights of law enforcement and criminal justice experts who participated in a 2-day forum on police involvement in prisoner reentry, and how mapping supports the process. Readers are guided through the steps required to obtain, map, and analyze data related to prisoner reentry. Information on number, names, location, criminal backgrounds, and reentry supervision/programming provided, has the potential to reduce the risk of recidivism and to improve the timely apprehension of those who do reoffend. Mapping can also identify the kinds of resources needed to assist returning prisoners, and produces a collective knowledge of prisoner reentry in a community. Examples of useful reentry maps, consideration of obstacles to the creation of reentry partnerships, and mapping difficulties are included. The report concludes with a discussion of how police agencies can use maps to influence changes in policies and procedures (Source NCJRS, modified).
