Summary
In a series of hard-hitting interviews with 12 women behind bars in the notorious Kingston Prison for Women before its closure, Tadman allows the women to tell their stories in their own words, revealing their childhoods, their lives and their crimes for all to see. But questions are also raised about the treatment of women in federal prisons, particularly in view of the 1994 incident in which a male riot squad stormed the confines of the prison, subjecting female prisoners to inhumane and abusive treatment. As for the occupants of P4W themselves, the majority had endured blighted childhoods and lived on the precipice - if not already mired in a deep pit - of unrelenting poverty, violence and desperation. In many cases, those were the decivise factors in their lives and when combined with flawed choices, it put them over the edge.
