OTTAWA – January 31, 2013 - The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, this week carried out a pre-budget consultation with stakeholders related to the Public Safety portfolio.

“Our Government's top priorities are jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Toews. “I want to hear directly from stakeholders and organizations who interact regularly with my portfolio, on how to keep Canadian communities safe, secure and resilient -- all within the reality of a constrained fiscal environment.  This is no easy task, which is why we are asking for the very best ideas.”

The Government of Canada is committed to lessening the reporting burdens for cruise ships. Minister Toews met with representatives from Canada's cruise ship industry and listened to stakeholders' recommendations on what can be done not only to ensure safe and strong borders - as it pertains to cruise ships - but how to do so on budget and with a minimum of regulation and red tape.

“Streamlining the reporting requirements of cruise ships in Canadian waters will allow our passengers to have more time to experience some of Canada's most scenic and iconic ports,” said Greg Wirtz, President of the North West & Canada Cruise Association. “We were very pleased to meet with Minister Toews today to discuss measures to streamline operations while keeping our maritime borders secure, enhancing the passenger's experience, and saving taxpayers' money.”

“Our Plan is keeping Canada on the right track, with over 900,000 net new jobs created since the end of the global recession – the best growth record among all G-7 countries,” added Minister Toews. “However, we all know challenges remain in the global economy – especially in the United States and Europe – and Canada can't become complacent.”
