TORONTO – September 27, 2012 – The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, today delivered closing remarks at the inaugural YYZ International Airport Investigators' Training Symposium, highlighting the Government's efforts toward enhancing safety and security at Canada's airports.
"Our government is committed to ensuring that Canada's aviation systems remain secure, resilient and adaptable to mitigate emerging and potential threats," said Minister Toews. "Our resiliency relies on the collaboration between our international partners, security intelligence and law enforcement agencies, all levels of government, industry stakeholders and civil society."
Minister Toews recognized the ongoing collaboration between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and local law enforcement agencies in fighting domestic and global terrorism, removing criminals wanted for serious criminality from Canada and combatting organized crime, drug trafficking and human trafficking.
"This important Symposium is the first of its kind in Canada and I commend the speakers and the participants for understanding the value of sharing lessons learned and best practices," noted Minister Toews. "The work that has been done is a testament to the shared commitment to work together to keep citizens safe from terrorist threats while also cracking down on the heinous crime of human trafficking and the movement of illegal drugs and other contraband goods across our borders."
The three-day symposium allowed government agencies, law enforcement, and private airport stakeholders a forum to work together towards the common goal of achieving a safer and more secure airport environment.
