OTTAWA, ONTARIO, July 20, 2012 — The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today regarding the death of Constable Derek Pineo of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of RCMP Constable Pineo who lost his life today while on duty."

"This is a very sad day for all Canadians.  The death of a police officer in the line of duty reminds us of the devotion and sacrifice of those who serve each day to keep us safe."
