Charges follow a four year investigation by the RCMP

March 15, 2011 — The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today following the issuing of Canada-wide arrest warrants for two former Winnipeg residents, Maiwand Yar and Ferid Ahmed Imam.

"The Government of Canada remains unwavering in its commitment to protect Canadians and support the global fight against terrorism. That is why Canada works very closely with international partners, including the United States, to combat terrorism and its perpetrators. We face the same threats and share the same concerns," said Minister Toews. "I would like to commend the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for their collaboration with security and law enforcement partners, and the investigation that has gone into the issuing of these arrest warrants."

The arrest warrants were laid on Monday, March 14, following a four-year investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The investigation involved collaboration between the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service, the Canada Border Services Agency, as well as the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and other international law enforcement agencies.
