Brief Description

The Crime Prevention Conditional Grant Fund supports and promotes evidence-based prevention and intervention initiatives at the provincial, municipal and local levels that lead to a reduction of gun and gang violence, and related issues. The program is administered annually by the New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety’s Crime Prevention and Program Development Branch.

Goals

The main goal of the Crime Prevention Conditional Grant Fund program is to:

  • Develop and/or implement prevention and intervention programs, or other initiatives, that address existing, emerging and underlying issues that can lead to gun and gang violence.

Clientele

Eligible regional, municipal and local governments, including Indigenous communities or band offices, provincial and local/regional police services, including Indigenous police services and/or its governing authority, Canadian universities or other educational institutions/boards, and domestic not-for-profit organizations may apply for the Crime Prevention Conditional Grant fund.

Interventions and initiatives funded should target those at higher risk of gun and gang violence before they get involved and/or support exit strategies for those engaged in gun and gang violence.

Core Components

Prevention initiatives and interventions are developed and proposed by eligible recipients, as detailed in the Crime Prevention Conditional Grant Fund Application. Projects must aim to address existing, emerging, and underlying issues that can lead to gun and gang violence. Communities with Community Safety plans are prioritized for funding.

Grants applications are vetted by the Crime Prevention Conditional Grant Review Committee, who ensure that applicants and projects meet eligibility criteria, address the appropriate scope, align with the goals of the fund, and demonstrate that the project can be managed through to completion. Successful applicants have a full fiscal year (April 1 – March 30) to implement the project. Multi-year funding requests are considered. There is a compulsory reporting requirement to ensure that the Crime Prevention Conditional Grant Fund program is achieving desired impacts, outcomes, and socio-economic return on investment.

Gathering Canadian Knowledge

Canadian Implementation Sites

Through Public Safety Canada’s Gun and Gang Violence Action Fund, funding was provided to the Department of Justice and Public Safety to implement its 5-year plan on gun and gang violence. As part of that plan, the province implemented a Crime Prevention Conditional Grant Fund program to facilitate local-level crime prevention activities.

The grant program began in 2019/20, and has provided funding for 11 initiatives to 10 organizations across the province. Projects funded have included the Parent-Child Assistance Program (https://pcap.psychiatry.uw.edu/), Thrive(https://partnersforyouth.ca/), Youth Connections Fredericton(https://johnhowardfredericton.ca/youth-services/youth-connections/), Stop Now and Plan(https://childdevelop.ca/snap/), and the It’s Your Business: DIPV in the Workplace Toolkit(https://www.toolkitnb.ca/home/).
