Brief Description

The Alberta Crime Prevention (ACP) Grant program provides funding every two years to support the delivery of services or supports directly relating to crime prevention or community safety and wellbeing. This includes programs or initiatives helping to keep youth out of gangs, or helping youth to safely exit from gangs.

Goals

The main goals of the ACP Grant program are to support service delivery agencies to:

  • Explore or use innovative, promising, or proven crime prevention practices;
  • Enhance or create prevention activities for people at risk of becoming involved in criminal activity;
  • Prevent crime or add public safety measures for vulnerable people or communities targeted by crime; or
  • Strengthen or add capacity to an existing program or initiative that does any of the above.

Clientele

Non-profit organizations, First Nations communities, Métis settlements, municipalities, and community-focused police programs or services can apply for the ACP Grant program, which runs a call every two years. Applicants must also present their programs or projects focused on crime prevention and building safe communities.

Core Components

The funded programs are designed and delivered by not-for-profit agencies within communities in Alberta. Program components may differ depending on the agency delivering the programming, and the needs of the area they are located within. These grants are provided based on an assessment of challenges and needs presented within individual proposals to develop or support programs that aim to reduce or prevent crime in their areas. Additionally, there is a compulsory reporting requirement for each recipient to ensure that the ACP Grant program is achieving its desired impacts, public safety outcomes, and a socio-economic return on investment.

Implementation Information

Some of the critical elements for the implementation of this program or initiative include the following:

  • Organizational requirements: The program is open to all not-for-profit agencies, registered charities, First Nation or Metis settlements and municipalities, as well as any community-focused police programs and services across Alberta that implement programs to reduce or prevent crime.
  • Partnerships: Partners are determined by each individual grant recipient based on the needs and challenges of their target audience.
  • Training and technical assistance: Training/technical assistance needs are determined by each individual grant recipient.
