Summary

Since the 1990s, there has been a growing concern about the resurgence of extremist and radical movements in the Western world. Contributors to this collection examine two forms of extremism in 21st century Britain – Islamic fundamentalism and the growth of extreme right groups – both of which pose barriers to the maintenance of a cohesive and stable society. The book presents new empirical research on the causes of these two ‘new’ extremisms and the appropriate responses by both the state and civil society.
