Summary

The video looks at the landmark decision issued by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1999 that decreed that judges must take into account the unique circumstances of Aboriginal people when passing sentence on Aboriginal offenders. While the Decision has since had far-reaching impact, considerable disagreement remains as to the meaning of the decision and the manner in which it is to be applied. This program sheds light on the original intent of the court decision, the conflicting views on it, and the opportunities that this important legal milestone represents—and the work ahead that upholding it will require.
