Out of Band Microsoft Security Bulletin - Vulnerability in Windows Shell Could Allow Remote Code Execution

Purpose

The purpose of this advisory is to bring attention to the out-of-band and critical Microsoft security bulletin MS10-046 addressing Windows Shell vulnerability.

Assessment

A critical vulnerability exists in multiple versions of the Windows Operating System. Windows incorrectly parses shortcuts in such a way that malicious code may be executed when the icon of a specially crafted shortcut is displayed. This vulnerability can be exploited locally through a malicious USB drive, or remotely via network shares and WebDAV. An exploit can also be included in specific document types that support embedded shortcuts.

Suggested action

Windows has released an out of band patch for this vulnerability. CCIRC recommends that administrators test and deploy these updates at the earliest opportunity.
