Government of Canada Web Site and Internet Domain Name Protocols
Information Note Number: IN01-006
10 October 2001
Purpose
OCIPEP has been advised of web sites with names that appear to be official Government of Canada web sites, but which are not registered to, or maintained by, the Government of Canada. To avoid confusion, OCIPEP is releasing the following guide to assist in the identification of Government of Canada web site addresses.
Suggested Action
The Canada Site – the Government of Canada's web site – is the primary Internet gateway to information about Canada and about the Government of Canada and its programs, services and initiatives. The Canada Site can be found at www.canada.gc.ca.
A list of all government department web sites can be found at the Canada Site through the following links:
As a general rule, most Government of Canada web sites and domains will end in ".gc.ca".
If you encounter a domain, which you feel is misrepresenting itself as a Government of Canada domain, please contact the OCIPEP Emergency Operations Centre.

Note to Readers
The Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC) operates within Public Safety Canada, and works with partners inside and outside Canada to mitigate cyber threats to vital networks outside the federal government. These include systems that keep Canada's critical infrastructure functioning properly, such as the electrical grid and financial networks, or contain valuable commercial information that underpins our economic prosperity. CCIRC supports the owners and operators of systems of national importance, including critical infrastructure, and is responsible for coordinating the national response to any serious cyber security incident.
