Protection against high-risk offenders

Almost all offenders return to live in the greater community once they have served their full sentence. The end of the sentence is known as the Warrant Expiry Date. Neither Correctional Service Canada nor the National Parole Board has the legal authority to lengthen or shorten a court sentence.

The Government of Canada, in cooperation with the provinces and territories, has developed tools to assist police in ensuring public safety when a high-risk offender is released. These tools include:

• Dangerous offender designation
• Long term offender designation
• National DNA Data Bank
• National Sex Offender Registry
• Peace bonds
