Harper Government Invests in Crime Prevention Projects
Helping Manitoba youth learn life skills to make smart choices
WINNIPEG, February 22, 2010 — Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, announced federal support of more than $3 million for four projects aimed at preventing crime in Manitoba.
“This Government is committed to preventing crime and building stronger and safer communities,” said Minister Toews. “The funding announced today supports initiatives that will help at-risk youth make better choices and avoid negative influences.”
Through the National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS), the Government of Canada is providing:
- $1,095,366 over three years to West Region Child and Family Services for its Roots and Wings project;
- $1,086,230 over three years to the Newcomers Education and Employment Development Services Inc. to implement the LINK project;
- The Pas Family Resource Centre will receive $649,889 over three years for its X-Roads project, and;
- Strong Heart Teaching Lodge will receive $219,023 over two years to implement the Seeing Oneself Initiative.
The NCPS is administered by Public Safety Canada. The Strategy provides funding support to selected projects that help prevent crime and increase knowledge about what works in crime prevention. The NCPS’s priorities are:
- addressing early risk factors among vulnerable children, youth and young adults;
- preventing recidivism among high-risk offenders;
- fostering crime prevention in Aboriginal and Northern communities; and,
- preventing youth gang and drug-related crime.
