Harper Government Invests in Crime Prevention Projects

The following projects are receiving support from the National Crime Prevention Strategy:

West Region Child and Family ServicesRoots and Wings (Erickson, Manitoba): This project will work with Aboriginal youth between the ages of twelve to fifteen to prevent and reduce substance abuse, drug-related crime and interpersonal violence. The project will foster the prevention of crime in Aboriginal communities by delivering a school-based curriculum in five First Nation communities and in the city of Winnipeg, including drug resistance skills, personal self-management, and general social skills. The funding amount is $1,095,366 over three years.

Newcomers Education and Employment Development Services Inc. (NEEDS)LINKing Refugee Youth and Families to Positive Social Supports (LINK):(Winnipeg, Manitoba): This project will work with refugee youth between the ages of twelve and eighteen who are at risk of criminal activity and gang recruitment upon their arrival in Canada. LINK will provide a number of activities, including an early education/orientation program for newly arrived youth that will provide enhanced awareness of the risks of gang and drug involvement, mentorship of youth and families, education support, and recreational programming. The funding amount is $1,086,230 over three years.

The Pas Family Resource CentreX-Roads (The Pas, Manitoba): This project will work to prevent children and youth between the ages of six and eighteen from becoming involved with gangs within the community of The Pas, and it will mobilize the community to respond to the current climate of gang recruitment. Through age-appropriate activities such as life skills training, counselling, cultural/traditional learning, recreational activities, and educational skills in addition to individual case management, X-Roads will target and reduce risk factors and increase protective factors for at-risk children and youth. The funding amount is $649,889 over three years.

Strong Heart Teaching LodgeSeeing Oneself Initiative (Winnipeg, Manitoba): This project will deliver a culturally competent school-based curriculum within four schools in Winnipeg’s north end for the prevention of youth substance abuse. The project aims to enhance health and well-being for at-risk Aboriginal youth and increase community safety, in addition to reducing crimes associated with youth substance use/abuse. The Seeing Oneself Initiative will increase protective factors in the lives of Aboriginal youth such as community engagement, participation in traditional healing and cultural activities, and skill building through strong social support. The funding amount is $219,023 over two years.
