Government of Canada funds crime prevention efforts in Prince Edward Island

Programs to offer youth life skills to make smart choices

The Adventure Group, Inc. − Moving Forward (Charlottetown, PEI): This project will work with women between the ages of 18 to 30 who have been identified as being at risk of offending or re-offending, by offering participants opportunities for learning as well as personal and skill development. The Moving Forward program will connect participants to community and government services, provide them with individual coaching, and engage them in group skills building. The funding amount is $433,300 over three years.

Aboriginal Women’s Association of PEIMawita’jik “Gathering Together” (Lennox Island, PEI): This project will work with at-risk children, youth and young adults in First Nations communities throughout Prince Edward Island in an effort to reduce incidents of violent crime and property crime associated with substance abuse. The Mawita’jik project will involve communities, families, service providers and youth in culturally sensitive activities which will help develop the skills needed to support effective crime prevention and reduction. The funding amount is $469,111 over three years.

John Howard Society of Prince Edward Island - Youth Achievement Program (Charlottetown, Summerside, Montague, PEI): This project will work with post-warrant young offenders and youth who are at high risk of criminal involvement in an effort to help them develop successful attachments with positive role models, as well as educational and employment institutions. The program will engage participants through counselling and mentoring, recreational and artistic activities, and access to social support networks. The program will also provide support to parents of at-risk youth, where possible and appropriate. The funding amount is $599,556 over three years.
