Government of Canada funds crime prevention efforts in Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Region

Programs to offer youth life skills to make smart choices

Chebucto Communities Development AssociationSeeds of Change Youth Inclusion Program (Spryfield, Nova Scotia): This project will work with youth between the ages of 14 and 18 who are at risk of criminal involvement. Program activities will focus on life skills, drug resistance and conflict resolution training, forming positive attachments with the school environment, and also include a parent training program with sessions designed to strengthen parenting skills and improve parent/child relationships and family communication. The funding amount is $693,005 over three years.

Atlantic Coordinating Committee on Crime Prevention and Community Safety - Building Knowledge of Model and Promising Crime Prevention Practices (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island): This project will work to transfer knowledge of model and promising crime prevention practices amongst crime prevention professionals in the Atlantic Region. The funding amount is $331,838 over three years.

Mi’kmaw Legal Support Network - Project Venture (Eskasoni, Indian Brook, Membertou and Pictou Landing, Nova Scotia): This project will work with children and youth between the ages of 10 to 14 who are most at-risk of offending and who reside in the First Nations communities of Eskasoni, Indian Brook, Membertou and Pictou Landing.  Participants will take part in school-based, community and family, and outdoor activities which will address the risk factors of substance abuse, lack of problem-solving skills, lack of connection to culture and community and a lack of recreational opportunities. The funding amount is $968,483 over 37 months.
