Government of Canada funds crime prevention efforts in the
Northwest Territories
The following projects are receiving support from the National Crime Prevention Strategy:
K'atlodeeche First Nation - Helping Youth to Help Themselves (Hay River, Northwest Territories): This project will work with at-risk children and youth between the ages of 7 and 18 by engaging them in life skills workshops, personal development sessions, employment skills workshops, recreation and outdoor activities and cultural and traditional activities in an effort to reduce their likelihood of engaging in offending behaviour. The funding amount is $473,874 over 36 months.
Government of the Northwest Territories, Department of Justice, Community Justice Division – N.W.T. Crime Prevention Knowledge Development Workshop (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories): This project will work with approximately 85 crime prevention professionals in the Northwest Territories. The goal of this project is to help crime prevention practitioners develop professional relationships with each other. The project will also help to create a shared system of knowledge and resources among these professionals. The amount of the funding is $165,890 over 15 months.
Government of Northwest Territories, Department of Justice - Program for Men Who Use Violence in Intimate Relationships (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories): This project will research, inform and guide the development of a culturally sensitive prevention program that will target men who are at high risk of using violence in intimate relationships. This approach will begin by reviewing the literature on relevant violence prevention programs and assessing their pertinence to an aboriginal northern context, choosing an appropriate approach and then commissioning a non-governmental organization to develop the full program for later use by northern aboriginal communities. The funding amount is $159,939 over 15 months.
South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) - Leadership and Resiliency Program (Hay River, Northwest Territories): This project will work with at-risk youth between the ages of 12 to 19, who are at risk of criminal involvement. The Leadership and Resiliency Program is designed to enhance youth’s internal strengths and resiliency in order to prevent their involvement in substance use and violence and promote optimum youth development. The approved funding amount is $1,440,619 over 60 months.
Public Denominational District Education Authority (Yellowknife Catholic Schools YCS) - Do Edaeze: YCS Leadership and Resiliency Program (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) – This project will work with at-risk children and youth between the ages of 6 and 19 years who are at risk of criminal involvement. The YCS Leadership and Resiliency Program aims to develop positive relationships, coping strategies and assist youth in setting goals by engaging them in individual training and community activities. The approved funding amount is $7,103,228 over 60 months.
