New law combats airport smuggling and security risks, says Van Loan
Ottawa, Ontario, June 23, 2009 – The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, says Canadians will see improved security at airports now that an Act to amend the Customs Act has received Royal Assent. The amended Customs Act allows officers to conduct searches within custom controlled areas, including airport terminals. The new rules will help fight organized crime and provide greater security against terrorist activity.
“This Government committed to increasing security and enhancing our economic prosperity,” said Minister Van Loan. “These changes provide the additional information, tools and flexibility required to help identify threats and prevent criminal activity all while ensuring legitimate flow of goods and travelers across our borders.”
These amendments will also ease the flow of goods across the borders and assist in targeting security efforts by making changes to facilitate “eManifest” – a program to allow advance collection and processing of commercial shipping information. Getting the right information at the right time on who and what is coming into Canada will enhance the CBSA’s capacity to identify contraband and other illegal items and security risks before they reach the Canadian border.
