Government of Canada takes action to prevent youth crime in Quebec
GATINEAU, April 24, 2009 – Today, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, announced federal support for a project aimed at preventing and reducing crime in Gatineau.
“Gang-related crime is a reality in many of our communities but together we can prevent it,” said Minister Cannon. “The funding we are announcing today will help steer youth in Gatineau away from the influences of gangs towards better, more productive lives.”
“I am pleased to give my support to the crime prevention initiatives of Public Safety Canada, and I would like to take this opportunity to express our full cooperation in pursuing their objectives,” said Jacques P. Dupuis, Minister of Public Security for Quebec. “We must do everything we can to prevent crime and keep our youth from joining street gangs. Young people are our future, and it is important to invest in their well-being and work to suppress the negative influences to which they may be exposed.”
This funding is part of a series of announcements today in the Province of Quebec. Through Public Safety Canada’s National Crime Prevention Centre we are providing close to $3.8 million to support eleven crime prevention projects that will help at-risk youth to make better choices.
The National Crime Prevention Strategy provides funding support to strategically selected projects that help prevent crime and increase knowledge about what works in crime prevention.
