Minister Day receives report on strengthening the RCMP
December 14, 2007 — The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement upon receiving the report of the Task Force on Governance and Cultural Change in the RCMP.
"Today I received an extensive report from the Task Force on Governance and Cultural Change in the RCMP. The Task Force has identified a number of important issues for the RCMP and provided comprehensive recommendations, which we will now review in great detail.
I have written to the RCMP Commissioner asking him to consider those recommendations that are administrative in nature and can be implemented quickly. Other recommendations involve complex structural and legislative change, which is why we must take the time necessary to give them proper consideration before further action is decided upon. We will seek the views of the provinces and territories and we will also review related reports, including the recent Public Accounts Committee report on the administration of the RCMP's pension and insurance plans.
This Government is committed to setting a path ahead that will make the RCMP a stronger, more accountable and modern organization."
The Government of Canada announced the creation of the Task Force on Governance and Cultural Change in the RCMP in July 2007. This Task Force was a key recommendation from David Brown, who led a full and independent investigation following allegations made about the management of the RCMP's pension and insurance plans.
The Task Force report was delivered to the Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day, and the President of the Treasury Board, Vic Toews.
