Public Safety Minister marks National Day to Remember Victims of Terror

June 23, 2007 (OTTAWA) – The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today made the following statement to mark the third annual National Day to Remember Victims of Terror.

"On June 23, 1985, a senseless act of terrorism resulted in an unimaginable loss for Canada when two hundred and eighty Canadians lost their lives on Air India Flight 182. At Japan's Narita Airport, another two victims made this an international tragedy felt deeply around the world. On this, the 22nd anniversary of this tragic day, we remember all Canadian citizens who have lost their lives through acts of terror.

Canada's new Government is deeply committed to keeping all Canadians safe from terrorism. As the first of several memorial sites is unveiled today in Toronto's Humber Bay Park East, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the Air India victims, and with all others whose loved ones have been taken by such senseless acts. The dedication of these memorials to the lives lost is a solemn reminder of the need for our continued vigilance against any threats to Canada today.

I extend my warmest thoughts and prayers to the families and friends affected by the Air India bombings and all other terrorist attacks."
