B.C. wildfire forces evacuations
On July 28, media reported that an aggressive new wildfire broke out north of Kamloops, at Bonaparte Lake, B.C., forcing the evacuation of about 125 people. A state of local emergency was declared at about 19:00 PDT. All residents within a 1.6-kilometre radius of Bonaparte Lake were ordered out of their homes and asked to report to emergency social services. Officials indicated that the fire, discovered on July 28, quickly grew to cover 1.5 square kilometres.

Enbridge pipeline leaking oil into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River
Media reported that since July 26, over three million litres of oil has been spilling into the Kalamazoo River from an Enbridge pipeline. The Kalamazoo River feeds into Lake Michigan; however, no oil has reached Canada. According to an Enbridge Pipelines Inc. statement, the company hasn't determined what caused the pipeline along the Kalamazoo River to burst. The 76-centimetre pipeline carries approximately 30 million litres of oil per day from Griffith, Indiana, to Sarnia, Ontario.

Cyber mastermind of botnet arrested in Slovenia
On July 27, Maclean’s reported that the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indicated that international law enforcement authorities have arrested the computer hacker responsible for creating the malicious computer code that infected about 12 million computers and invaded major corporations worldwide. The cyber scam, using a botnet known as Mariposa, involved stealing credit cards and online banking credentials. The Mariposa botnet appeared in December 2008.

ATMs vulnerable to attacks
On July 28, The Register reported that a startling percentage of the world's automated teller machines are vulnerable to physical and remote attacks that can steal administrative passwords and personal identification numbers, as well as cash. At the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, a security researcher demonstrated attacks against two unpatched models from two of the world's biggest ATM makers.

Government of Canada invests in wind energy in New Brunswick
On July 28, Natural Resources Canada announced an investment of up to $28.6 million over ten years in Atlantic Canada through the ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program. The Caribou Wind Park consists of 33 wind turbines with a total generating capacity of 99 megawatts. The $1.5-billion ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program provides a one cent per kilowatt-hour incentive, with the goal of increasing Canada’s renewable electricity capacity by approximately 4,000 megawatts. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this investment with an additional $2.4 billion to support the development and deployment of cleaner energy technologies and supporting infrastructure, including the Clean Energy Fund and the Green Infrastructure Fund.
