Debit card skimming – Interac reports consumers robbed of $142 million last year
According to police, criminals across Canada are stealing debit card terminals, installing decoy equipment to record card information and pin codes, then replacing the original terminals and using the skimmed data from the decoy units to clean out bank accounts.  While Interac has programs in place to prevent fraud, they recommend users protect and change their PIN codes often.  According to an Interac spokesperson, a total of $142 million was reimbursed to customers who were victims of debit card fraud last year.
