Areva, N.B. reveal nuclear plans
New Brunswick (NB) Premier Shawn Graham, Energy Minister Jack Keir and officials from the French nuclear company Areva announced their intent to explore building a second reactor at NB Power's Point Lepreau nuclear plant on Thursday.  The potential light water reactor may also come with a proposed clean energy park that may also include offshore wind, biomass and solar power generation.  While Areva said that it would help build a business case for the reactor, it would be entirely responsible for managing the design, construction and financing of the project.  NB Power would be responsible for operating the unit once it was completed.  The Point Lepreau station operated by NB Power is Atlantic Canada's only nuclear reactor. When the station was licensed in the 1970s it was permitted to hold more than one reactor.

Deepwater oil exploration approved
The regulator supervising Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore oil industry has approved new exploration in deep waters.  The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board called for bids for two parcels located in an area known as the Flemish Pass, which is north of the basin on the Grand Banks where four commercial fields have already been discovered, three of which are in production.  The new exploration areas have depths ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 meters. The Hibernia platform, by contrast, is just 80 meters above the ocean floor.  International oil industry interest in the Flemish Pass area spiked last year when StatoilHydro Canada announced it had found hydrocarbons in a property called Mizzen 0-16.
