CCIRC releases advisory AV10-019: Critical Security Update for Adobe Reader and Acrobat
On June 30, Public Safety Canada's Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC) released advisory AV10-019 to bring attention to an accelerated release of the quarterly update of Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.3.3 and 8.2.3, which addresses CVE-2010-1297. Multiple critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Reader and Acrobat. They could be exploited by attackers to cause a denial of service or compromise a vulnerable system by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted PDF document. These issues are caused by memory corruptions, invalid pointers, uninitialized memory, array-indexing and use-after-free errors when processing malformed data within a PDF document. This is a follow up to CCIRC alert AL10-002 released on June 11. CCIRC recommends that departments liaise with the administrators/maintainers of the network service to identify affected products and assess the need to apply the appropriate updates and/or workarounds.

Chalk River NRU reactor to resume production at end of July
On June 30, the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) reported that the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) completed its inspections and assessments of the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor weld repairs and the vessel’s fitness-for-service. The TSSA inspection was signed off as the final qualification of the vessel repair. Based on the Non-Destructive Examinations, as well as the visual inspections of the repair regions and the successful leak check, AECL has concluded that the NRU vessel can now be returned-to-service. AECL will be appearing before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in a public hearing on July 5 to consider AECL’s application for the restart of NRU. It is estimated that NRU will resume isotope production by the end of July.
