Flood cost estimates, Trans-Canada reopens in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan
To update on Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-120, on June 26, the Calgary Herald reported that early estimates of the cost of flood damage in the worst-hit areas of southeast Alberta are at $66 million, and a decision on disaster recovery funding is expected in mid-July. In Medicine Hat, the tally is $51 million.
Of that total, $47 million covers damage to municipal infrastructure such as roads, bridges and utilities. The other $4 million applies to roughly 340 homes and businesses hit by flooding. As of June 25, almost all of those properties had been inspected and 11 were condemned. In Cypress County, which includes the communities of Irvine and Walsh, damage was estimated at $15 million, a third of which is the projected cost of repairing 17 bridges. The total also includes $3 million for agricultural losses and $4 million to repair and replace some of the estimated 400 homes that suffered water damage.
Highway 1 from just east of Medicine Hat into Saskatchewan was reopened. RCMP indicated that the affected area from Dunmore to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, opened, although a stretch east of the Alberta border was down to two lanes.

Government of Canada assists Manitoba with response to wildfires
On June 25, the Government of Canada announced that the federal government provided the Government of Manitoba with a final payment of $5.2 million under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) program for response and recovery costs related to wildfires in the province in 2003. In the spring and summer months of 2003, Manitoba experienced severe wildfires affecting the Municipalities of Thompson, Lynn Lake, Leaf Rapids and Lac du Bonnet, as well as the First Nations communities of Norway House, Waasoagomach, Oxford House, and Split Lake. The wildfires caused the evacuation of approximately 900 people. Since the inception of the DFAA in 1970, the Government of Canada has provided more than $1.9 billion to the provinces and territories in disaster financial assistance.
