B.C. mudslide closes highway: Update
To update on Pubic Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-114, on June 15, media reported the evacuation order remains for the 50 residents who had to leave their homes. Heavy rain in the region has delayed efforts to clear debris from Highway 97. The weather has also complicated the work of engineers, who are assessing soil stability. Crews have been posted in the mountains to watch for any signs of changes in the waterflow. Officials indicated that short detours around the closed section of Highway 97 will remain in place until the debris can be cleared. According to CBC, officials confirmed that the Province of British Columbia will provide financial assistance, through the Provincial Emergency Program, to help get farmers back in operation. According to Radio-Canada, the Ministry of Environment confirmed that the landslide was caused by the failure of an earthen dam of a reservoir, which was built in the 1930s to help irrigate the orchards.
