B.C. mudslide closes highway: Update
To update on Pubic Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-113, media reported that Highway 97 remained closed in both directions, with short detours around the mudslide that occurred on June 13. Staff from the ministries of transportation and environment and the Provincial Emergency Program were working to figure out how to clean up the damage. The RCMP confirmed the evacuation area grew from 26 houses to 30, affecting more than 50 people. According to CBC, officials in B.C. indicated that the mudslide was caused by heavy rains and the failure of an embankment holding back a man-made irrigation lake. About two-thirds of the water drained from the lake on the mountain above the homes. Emergency services are now trying to assess the stability of the ground.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense in Ottawa to draw support for international cyber warfare organization
The Ottawa Citizen reported that U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn was in Ottawa on June 14 to draw support for a new U.S.-led initiative to create an international organization that would monitor and respond to cyber attacks. Mr. Lynn indicated that the threat posed by hackers and computer viruses is steadily growing and poses a risk unlike anything the global community has seen. He also indicated that with cyber warfare, international co-operation is imperative. In March, the U.S. government released its $40-billion U.S. Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative, a plan outlining the powers the government has and how it will use those powers in the event of an emergency. According to the Ottawa Citizen, Mr. Lynn's visit to Ottawa could help spur the federal government to begin developing an emergency plan should the country's electric, banking or business computer networks come under attack. Such a plan was announced in February's throne speech.

During the summer, work will be carried out over approximately 300 metres for ballasting the foundation of the embankment, filling the site with sand and seeding.
