Quebec fire evacuees return home
To update from Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-107, on June 4-6, media reported that most residents of Wemotaci in the Haute-Mauricie area have returned to their homes. Some returned on June 4; however, most returned on June 5. Only a dozen elderly patients remained in La Tuque. As well, power was restored early on June 5. The road to the reservation is open, but access to certain areas of Haute-Mauricie is still limited. According to SOPFEU, Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency, there are still 20 forest fires burning in Quebec, with all but one under control.

Severe storm hits Leamington, Ontario
CBC reported that town officials of Leamington, Ontario, declared a state of emergency after a tornado, which occurred through the night from June 5-6, causing widespread damage. Power lines were knocked down and about 15,000 customers were without electricity. Crews were working to replace lines, but some residents could be without power for days. Most phone service was restored by the afternoon of June 6. No injuries were reported, but damage to property was extensive. Many roads were blocked by trees and debris. Town officials opened a recreation centre for displaced people.

Government of Canada invests in the Port of Montreal
On June 4, Industry Canada announced that the Government of Canada will invest in a major project to optimize infrastructure at the Port of Montreal. This investment of over $10 million will be used to maximize capacity of the Cast Terminal to better meet the needs of marine carriers that use the Port of Montreal. The Government of Canada will provide up to $5.1 million for this project under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The Montreal Port Authority will cover the remaining costs of the project. In the last year, the Government of Canada has committed to investing over $14 million in various projects through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund to revitalize the Port of Montreal.

The $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, announced in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, targets projects that can be completed by March 31, 2011. To date, the Government of Canada has committed over $126 million from this fund to 42 port projects in Canada, including $40.7 million for 11 projects in Quebec.
