Quebec forest fires force evacuations: Update
To update from Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-104, on June 1-2, media reported that according to SOPFEU, Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency, cooler temperatures and some rainfall helped firefighters battle the forest fires still active in Quebec, but there is still much work ahead. Obedjiwan and Manawan residents who were evacuated due to the forest fires and smoke were allowed back in their homes. The evacuation order for Wemotaci remains. In Quebec, 1,300 firefighters are battling over 37 fires, almost all in the Haute-Mauricie region, 5 of which are not controlled. The smog warning for many areas has ended; however, on June 2, Environment Canada issued a smog warning for La Tuque.

CFIA issues Public Safety Alert for product tampering of sausage in Toronto
On May 31, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a Public Safety Alert regarding product tampering of sausage product in Toronto. The Toronto Police Service reported that since May 2010, police have been investigating three separate food tampering cases involving Piller's Polish Sausage. Customers, after purchasing the item, located a needle embedded in a sausage. Two packages were purchased at a No Frills store.  On June 1, police were advised of two new cases of food tampering. The public is requested to check the packaging of all food products thoroughly for signs of tampering.

Canada-Quebec partnership to benefit six municipalities from the MRC of Maskinongé
On May 31, Infrastructure Canada announced a joint financial contribution of $7,324,680 for nine projects in the MRC of Maskinongé under a federal-provincial agreement made in relation to the Program for the renewal of drinking water and wastewater pipes (PRECO). Together with the contributions from the municipalities, this investment, estimated at $10,987,020, will fund major infrastructure work to consolidate drinking water supplies. The municipalities receiving funding, as well as the joint contribution allocated, are Louiseville, Saint-Alexis-des-Monts, Paroisse de Saint-Barnabé, Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, Saint-Justin and Yamachiche.

PRECO enables Quebec municipalities to restore or replace their water mains and sewers. Investment priorities are set by the municipalities in accordance with action plans submitted to the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Use. The municipalities can choose between repair and replacement. There are over 80,000 kilometres of municipal underground water and sewer mains in Quebec, estimated to be worth over $60 billion.

On May 31, Infrastructure Canada announced a joint financial contribution of $11,694,050 to the municipalities of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel, Saint-Boniface, Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc and Shawinigan under a federal-provincial agreement made in relation to the Program for the renewal of drinking water and wastewater pipes (PRECO). Together with contributions from the municipalities, this investment, estimated at $17,541,075, will fund major infrastructure work in the Mauricie Region to consolidate drinking water supplies.
