Residents evacuated due to wildfire in Alberta
To update from Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-093, on May 16, the Alberta Emergency Management Agency issued a mandatory evacuation notice due to a wildfire in the Opal area, which is north of Edmonton. Media reported that winds gusting up to 40 km/h caused the flames to jump a 10-metre-wide fireguard. As of May 14, the brush fire had burned at least 22 square kilometres. The blaze has destroyed one home; however, there have been no injuries. Fireguards are being dug to keep the fire away from homes and outbuildings. Firefighters from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and volunteers have been deployed and seven helicopters have been used to attack the flames. Officials indicated that it could take several weeks to completely extinguish the fire; however, winds are expected to be calmer on May 17.
