VIA service between Toronto and Ottawa to resume
Further to Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-092, VIA Rail Canada (VIA) advised that during the morning of May 14, regular service between Toronto and Ottawa will resume. VIA’s regular train service was disrupted on May 12 due to a freight train derailment near Smiths Falls, Ontario. VIA anticipates that some trains may experience minor delays due to rail congestion.

Alberta county declares wildfire emergency
CBC reported that Thorhild County, located north of Edmonton, declared a local state of emergency on May 13 after strong winds caused a brushfire to start burning out of control. It may have increased by 20 square kilometres overnight. Two properties were evacuated on May 12, and on May 13 all homes in the hamlet had been put on an evacuation alert. Aircraft tankers were laying down lines of fire retardant to protect the structures. Forestry officials report that the past few days of warmer weather and strong winds have dried out conditions throughout most of the province. A total of 22 forest fires have started in the province since May 12.

CFIA issues Health Hazard Alert for certain pepperoni and bacon products due to possible Listeria
On May 13, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a Health Hazard Alert warning the public not to consume certain Salerno Sliced Pepperoni and Springer's Sliced Bacon because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. These products have been distributed in Ontario. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. The manufacturer, Springer's Meats Inc., Hamilton, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

On May 13, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a Health Hazard Alert warning the public not to consume certain Casa Italia brand meat and cheese combo packs because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. These products have been distributed nationally. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. The manufacturer, Zadi Foods Ltd., Brampton, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
