Government of Canada announces funding for Emergency Preparedness
On May 5, the Government of Canada, during National Emergency Preparedness Week, announced combined funding of $8 million to the provinces and territories to support emergency preparedness through the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR). Over 400 projects across the country will benefit from this federal funding for the fiscal year 2010-2011. It will allow for the purchase of emergency response equipment such as radios and other telecommunications, emergency generators, computer software, thermal imaging cameras, and decontamination showers. Funding is also being dedicated to emergency training and planning exercises.

Health Canada updates on recall of Children and Infant's Motrin and Tylenol products
On May 4, Health Canada announced that it is updating Canadians on its completed risk assessment about recalled products of Children and Infant's Motrin and Tylenol products by McNeil Consumer Healthcare. The department's assessment concurs with statements issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and McNeil Consumer Healthcare that the probability of a serious adverse reaction associated with the affected recalled products is very low. McNeil Consumer Healthcare is advising Canadians who have purchased these recalled products to discontinue use. Health Canada is continuing to work with the U.S. FDA in reviewing McNeil Consumer Healthcare's corrective actions.

Unrest of Greece affects Canadian financial markets
CTV reported that the Toronto stock market closed sharply lower on May 5 for a second session of trading amid growing concerns that the Greek debt crisis will spread to other southern European countries such as Portugal and Spain. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 155.73 points at 11,875.13, on top of a 166-point slide on May 4.
