OpenSSL Advisory - Multiple Vulnerabilities

Purpose

The purpose of this advisory is to bring attention to multiple security advisories released by OpenSSL.

Assessment

CCIRC is aware of six recently disclosed vulnerabilities in OpenSSL, two of which are rated as critical. The vulnerabilities exist in the Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Datagram TLS (DTLS) and could be remotely exploited by attackers.

Affected versions:  OpenSSL 0.9.8, 1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2-beta1

The critical vulnerabilities are DTLS invalid fragment vulnerability (CVE-2014-0195) and SSL/TLS MITM Vulnerability (CVE-2014-0224) and are affecting multiple versions of OpenSSL. The DTLS invalid fragment vulnerability is rated critical on both the client and server side. The SSL/DTLS MITM Vulnerability is rated critical on the client side and rated as important on the server side.

The four vulnerabilities rated as important include a DTLS recursion flaw, SSL_MODE_RELEASE_BUFFERS NULL pointer deference, SSL_MODE_BUFFERS session and ECDH vulnerabilities. Exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow attackers to cause a denial of service attack.

Suggested Action

CCIRC recommends that system administrators test and deploy the vendor released updates to affected platforms accordingly.
