Project offers at-risk girls life skills to make smart choices
WHITEHORSE - February 11, 2011 - Today, the Harper Government is delivering support for a program aimed at helping at-risk girls in the Yukon Territory to make better choices and avoid engaging in criminal activities with over $1 million for the SNAP® Girls Connection Program, in Whitehorse.
The announcement was made by the Honourable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Regional Minister for the North and Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety.
"Our Government is committed to helping prevent crime and building safer communities for families, including here in the Yukon Territory," said Minister Day. "The support we are announcing today demonstrates our ongoing efforts to reduce crime."
"This program will help to provide at-risk girls in local communities with the life skills they need to make smarter choices," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This Government supports programs such as this one that help to stop crime before it happens."
"We believe the SNAP® Girls Connection Program will help Yukon girls build positive life skills," said Government of Yukon Health and Social Services Minister Glenn Hart.
The SNAP® Girls Connection Program will target between 40-60 girls, aged 6-12 years, and aims to reduce aggressive and anti-social behaviour; teach anger and impulse control in both children and their parents; and teach children effective behavioural skills for reducing aggressive and delinquent behaviour. This project will be delivered out of the Youth Achievement Centre (Yukon Government) in Whitehorse and will receive $1,029,611.75 over approximately four years.
Through the National Crime Prevention Strategy’s (NCPS) Crime Prevention Action Fund, the Government of Canada is providing funding to community organizations in the Yukon to implement crime prevention projects in communities that would benefit most.
About the National Crime Prevention Strategy:
The National Crime Prevention Strategy is administered by Public Safety Canada. The strategy provides funding support to selected projects that help prevent crime and increase knowledge about what works in crime prevention. It is a part of the Government of Canada’s plan to tackle crime in order to build stronger, safer communities. The NCPS’s priorities are:
- addressing early risk factors among vulnerable children, youth and young adults;
- preventing recidivism among high-risk offenders;
- fostering crime prevention in Aboriginal and Northern communities; and
- preventing youth gang and drug-related crime.
